Abstract
Animal vocal communication is usually interactive when individuals are active at the same time; their acoustic signals influence each other’s behaviour, sometimes resulting in complicated types of vocal co-ordination. The highly variable singing behaviours performed by male blackbirds, Turdus merula, at dawn are a good example of such effects (the general features of blackbird song necessary to understand this example are described in Box I).
