Abstract

The article lists the results of experimental and theoretical research on the photo-production of π0 mesons at protons and composite nuclei in the low-energy range. The principal dynamic characteristics of the process were determined for hydrogen. A detailed comparison is made between experimental results and dispersion theory. A discrepancy between theory and experiment was established and the reasons for the discrepancy were investigated. A detailed photoproduction scheme was developed for nuclei. It was shown that elastic coherent formation of π0 mesons is the dominating process. The experimental results were used to determine structural parameters of nuclei. Several problems are mentioned, whose solution will provide new experimental information required for the development of a theory of pion photoproduction.
