Abstract
Vasculitis, inflammation in and around the blood vessels, which is sometimes associated with fibrinoid necrosis, may be seen in many of the conditions discussed in this book. In most rheumatic diseases, vasculitis is only one feature of a well-defined, complex, pathologic process (Fig. 7.1), and the disease (e.g., SLE or dermatomyositis) is best characterized by other distinctive diagnostic clinical and laboratory features. However, in the diverse and perhaps totally unrelated syndromes discussed in this chapter, vasculitis itself is the predominant pathologic process, and the clinical manifestations are primarily a direct result of the damage to the blood vessels (Table 7.1).
