Abstract
The precursors to invasive squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinoma of the cervix are among the most extensively studied lesions occurring in women. The studies have been facilitated by the anatomic location of the organ, which is readily accessible to both clinical and morphologic investigations without significant danger to the patient, and by the high rate of cervical cancer precursors, providing a generous source of supply of study material. Despite such advantages for investigations, there are considerable differences of opinion regarding the natural history of preinvasive cervical neoplasia. Most of these controversies are attributable to differences in definitions and terminology of the disease as well as to differences in techniques of investigation and methods of data analysis.
