Materials for infrared and optical filters

  • Chapter

Abstract

Various materials are used for the fabrication of optical systems, either for the manufacture of components or for the mounts which ensure the integrity of the assembly. Transparent materials are selected as a function of their optical qualities: refractive index and transmittance over the spectral band being considered. Their cost should also remain compatible with the overall cost price of the instrument. The choice is also made for materials which have mechanical properties sufficient to ensure the required precision for fabrication. Finally, the stability is a determinant quality, both for the optical components and the mountings. It assumes certain physical—chemical properties which we are now going to be defined.
