Conclusions and Future Directions
In this chapter, we summarize the material we have presented throughout the book. The book consists of two parts. The first part is concerned with Knowledge Base Management Systems (KBMS), i.e. database management systems extended with rule facilities. We have presented how relational and object-oriented database (OODB) systems have been extended with either deductive or active rules. We have analyzed various implementation techniques, giving special emphasis on those parts of the implementation that can be re-used in order to hook in the database system multiple rule types, if possible.
