Abstract

I first visited Cambridge in December 1933, when at the age of eighteen I travelled there by train from my school Fettes in Edinburgh to take the scholarship examination. Edinburgh could be cold in winter, but Cambridge was much colder; the Cam was frozen over and a window in my rooms could not be closed, so that there was a constant icy draught throughout my rooms.
