Single-Particle Vibrational Input States in Interactions between Neutrons and Nuclei

Abstract

The intermediate state or input state model, which was proposed by Block and Feshbach [1] has been extensively discussed in recent years [2–5]. This model is of particular interest because at the present time rather comprehensive data has been accumulated which points to the inadequacy of the optical model, the direct-interaction model, and the statistical model for providing a theoretical description of nuclear reactions. There is reason to hope that the concept of intermediate states, which is a very general approach and could qualitatively explain a number of experimental results, will make it possible to describe various nuclear processes from a unified viewpoint, and will become a useful tool for research on the structure of complex nuclei.
