Abstract
Trace metal pollution is among the most pervasive and serious environmental problems facing the biosphere. In 1988, global releases of lead, mercury, cadmium, copper, and zinc were estimated to be: 1,160; 11; 30; 2,150; and 2,340 thousand metric tons/year, respectively (Nriagu & Pacyna, 1988). The largest sources of trace metal pollution were mining and the smelting of non-ferrous metals (Nriagu & Pacyna, 1988). Substantial quantities of trace metals are also released as the result of; coal combustion, refuse and sewage disposal, and manufacturing (steel production and plating, battery manufacturing, and electroplating).
