Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease

When the brain is not adequately perfused with blood and is deprived of oxygen, glucose, and other nutrients, a variety of neurological, neuropsychiatric, and neuropsychological abnormalities may result, depending on how long and which portions of the cerebrum are involved. As is well known, the complete deprivation of blood for longer than 3 min produces neuronal, glial, and vascular necrosis and irreversible brain damage; i.e., cerebral infarction (stroke) and ischemic necrosis. If blood flow is reduced for a shorter period, transient neurological abnormalities may occur.
