This paper was prepared on short notice (overnight) upon request of the organizers and without any background material available. The idea of the organizers was to use the development path of magnetic fusion as an example and as a basis for an assessment of the status of muon catalized fusion. With this idea in mind, this paper is not addressing the expert of magnetic fusion but rather our colleagues of muon catalized fusion. It is trying to start “ab ovo”, to extract the essentials, to give arguments by order of magnitude and to avoid unnecessary details. Where appropriate, comparison with muon catalized fusion is made.
