Abstract
This paper investigates the initial cell search in the UMTS-FDD (W-CDMA). This search consists of three distinctive stages, which are described and their complexities are derived. Also, their performances are estimated, and three specific parameters, which directly affect their performances, are identified. As the most important parameter of every initial synchronisation procedure is its mean synchronisation time, its estimates are presented. Finally, an investigation for a possible set of parameters is accomplished, with a resulting mean synchronisation time equal from 32.7 ms to 47.7 ms according to the noise level, with a worst case 90% synchronisation time equal to 69.5 ms.
