Abstract

Basic knowledge about the distribution, abundance, phenology and ecology of different mosquito species is an essential requirement for a successful control campaign against these insects. For example, population dynamics and migration behaviour of the target organisms have a vital influence on the design of a control strategy. In parasitological and epidemiological studies, the interaction between the parasite/ pathogen, or the vector and host, must be evaluated to suppress mosquito-borne diseases successfully. Therefore, at the beginning of all mosquito control campaigns, extensive entomological studies have to be carried out. In this chapter, the most important methods of mosquito research will be presented. A complete review of mosquito collecting methods and analysis of collected data is given by Service (1993).
