Abstract
Preliminary measurements have been made on the magnetic properties of compositionally-modulated ferromagnetic thin foils of Pd-Ni and Pd-Co, using ferromagnetic resonance and a torsion balance magnetometer. Qualitative studies have also been made of the effect of the introduction of hydrogen on the structure and magnetization of the foils. The addition of hydrogen changed the amplitude of modulation as well as the state of stress of the foils. The magnetization density and the magnetic anisotropy coefficient were also affected. In foils with and without the hydrogen we observed a peak below 50° K in the FMR linewidth versus temperature curves. When the modulation amplitude was reduced by annealing, a double resonance spectrum was observed. Measurements were also made of the ac susceptibility of a hydrogenated Pd-Ni foil in very low applied magnetic fields.

Considering the problem of interfaces in CMA, this makes Pd-Ni quite a bit more interesting than the Cu-Ni system where eight nearest neighbors of Ni atoms are necessary for the alloy to be ferromagnetic.
