In the past, awareness and understanding of vestibular sensation have tended to lag behind those of the other special senses, perhaps because of the elusive nature of its influence during normal behavior. However, a recent outbreak of research interest bearing on the general field of vestibular function, aided by the system’s accessibility for detailed study at so many stages, has uncovered an extensive and rapidly growing range of new information sufficient to rank the vestibular system as one of the primary special senses.
