Financial Considerations

Abstract

The costs and benefits that are likely to result from a decision to invest in advanced manufacturing technology will obviously depend upon the nature of the investment that is made. For example, the elements involved in a decision to invest in CAD will be totally different, in terms of the types of costs and benefits affected, to the elements involved in a decision to invest in CNC machines. However, it is possible to identify factors which may be beneficially affected in a general way by investment in new technology. Some of these factors may be especially difficult to quantify, and thus to incorporate into a financial appraisal. Nevertheless, if nothing else, appreciation of the factors relevant to justification may help to increase the awareness of opportunities.
