Abstract
The first part of this chapter deals successively with early monetary cooperation, the European Monetary System, and the monetary union established by the Maastricht Treaty. The second part gives an appraisal of the EC’s activity.

A. Publications of the Communities
The Office for Official Publications of the European Communities in Luxemburg published the texts of the basic treaties in all official languages. See, for example, European union. Selected instruments taken from the Treaties (Book I, 2 vol., 1995). For the official texts of EC legislation and communications see the Official Journal of the European Communities — every working day, in English since 1 January 1973
before 1958 there was a Journal Officiel de la CECA,with an English edition from 31 July 1954 to 27 December 1956, the Official Gazette of ECSC). The Journal consists of two series, the L (legislation) and the C (information and notices). The Directory of Community legislation in force and other acts of the Community institutions is updated twice a year and is classified by subject-matter.
General information on Community policy is supplied by the Commission in its annual General report on the activities of the Communities (since 1967, combined for ECSC, EEC and Euratom) and in the Bulletin of the European Communities,ten times a year, with supplements on certain issues)
before 1968 there were quarterly Bulletin de la Communauté Européenne du Charbon et de l’Acier, Haute Autorité and a monthly Bulletin de la Communauté Européenne Economique (since 1968 also in English), Bulletin of the European Economic Community Published in conjunction with the General Report are the Report on the agricultural situation in the Community, the Report on the development of the social situation in the Community and the Report on competition policy
There is a cumulative annual catalogue of publications and quarterly updates. Statistical information is provided by the Statistical Office of the European Communities see Eurostat yearbook 1996. A statistical view on Europe 1985–1995 Since 1979 also European economy — quarterly with its supplements Series A. Economic trends, Series B. Business and consumer survey results (both 11 issues per year) and Series C. Economic reform (4 issues per year).
