Review on Structural and Chemical Properties of Transition Metal Phosphorus Trisulfides MPS3

  • Chapter
Intercalation in Layered Materials

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 148))

Abstract

Layered phases are rather attractive compounds because they present many unusual physical and chemical properties that are not commonly encountered in three dimensional materials. Let us mention charge density waves occurrence, 2D anisotropic magnetic behaviour, strong anisotropy of conductivity for example. These specific properties are the consequence of space oriented and mainly covalent bondings taking place in the slabs that compose the structure. Transition metal dichalcogenides (T.M.D.C.) represent a significant and well known series of layered materials. In these, strongly bonded slabs composed of two anionic planes enclosing a cationic one, develop in infinite sheets. Stacking of such cation-chalcogen sandwiches leaves empty spaces between the layers otherwise weakly bonded to each other.
