Created 50 years ago, the intensive care unit (ICU) is now an essential part of hospital care. After a couple of decades in which ICU research was more concerned with technical issues, a significant number of research groups are now focusing their attention on ways to improve the organization of the ICU and its place in the continuum of care. An essential part of this process is the evaluation of ICU discharge policies and their consequences.
