Abstract
Mycobacteria in the Mycobacterium avium complex have recently become clinically important opportunistic pathogens with a demonstrated ability to cause severe disseminated infections in patients suffering from AIDS (6,7,9,13). Although there are a variety of other nontuberculous mycobacteria that can infect humans, it appears that only certain serovars of the MAC are the most common to be associated with individuals who have AIDS (14). It has been suggested that the increased number of MAC infections in AIDS patients may be due to an immunologic defect which selectively favors these mycobacteria over other nontuberculous mycobacteria (14).
