Putting the Pieces Together

  • Jeremy Bernstein

As the reports proceed, the ten German scientists settle into a restless waiting period. They are sure that they are about to be released. They, of course, do not know that British law permits them to be held for six months—and only six months—without a charge being brought. One wonders whether anyone at this point was giving much thought as to their eventual disposition. At times the tension becomes almost unbearable. Their discussion continues to focus on how the atomic bomb was made. Their speculations culminate in Heisenberg’s lecture to his colleagues on August 14, in which he reveals once again his superficial understanding of bomb physics.
