Handbook of Marriage and the Family

Abstract

In the past, most marriages ended with the death of a spouse. Today, the majority of marriages will end with a divorce. Although marriage continues to be important, recent changes in the American lifestyle, such as cohabitation, later age at marriage, increased out-of-wedlock childbearing, divorce, and remarriage, have changed the institution of marriage. For many people, marriage is no longer seen as a lifetime commitment.
