Abstract
In Japan many enzymes find application in various industrial fields such as textiles, starch processing, leather, foods and pharmaceuticals. The total value of enzymes produced in Japan in 1974 was about 6,236 million yen (about 20.8 million U.S. dollars). Amylase and protease comprise the greatest portion of the enzymes produced. A small amount of enzyme has been used for the production of biochemicals such as amino acids, nucleotides and organic acids. In recent years, considerable interest has arisen concerning sophisticated use of enzymes as catalysts in industrial processing, analytical chemistry and medical therapy.
