Analytical and Biomedical Applications of Immobilized Enzymes: A Review

  • Chapter
Enzyme Engineering

Abstract

The aim of this review is to cover two related topics which differ to a large extent in their aims and their operating conditions. Since these proceedings provide several papers of a specialized session in these topics which allow specialists in the field to become aware of new technical solutions, this review will restrict itself to an analysis of the constraining factors, of the technical solutions and of remaining problems. Each of these aspects is illustrated as far as possible by one or several published works in the field. Concerning the analytical applications, quantitative analysis will be considered exclusively. Excluded will be any reference to qualitative analyses, such as the use of immobilized enzymes as a ligand in affinity chromatography, for example. With regard to medical aspects these were reviewed during the previous Enzyme Engineering Conference (1). Therefore, only the more recent work will be discussed.
