Application of Computers to Enzyme Recovery

Although in recent years a considerable effort has been made to apply digital computer technology to the monitoring and control of fermentation processes (1–8), little or no attention has been paid to automating the recovery of fermentation products. The fermented culture is an expensive raw material from the point of view of the recovery process. It is therefore likely that the economic justification for computer methods and automation is as great in product recovery as it is in fermentation. The discussion which follows describes some thoughts and exploratory studies on the automation of the recovery process by computer. The intention of these preliminary investigations was to uncover (a) what control structure would be appropriate to recovery, (b) what types of operations could be con-controlled, (c) what form could the control programming take and (d) what could be measured and what further measurements would be desired.
