Abstract

This study was conducted by three researchers/designers from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, in response to a request for assistance by the Director of the Social Services Department of the Cambridge Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts. The researchers had the unique opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of including social research in all stages of the design process. They proceeded from predesign programming through design and construction to postoccupancy evaluation. Describing in detail the process followed by the researchers, this study includes comparisons of the old and new offices and explains the research methods that were used.
