Endotoxin and Kupffer Cells in Liver Disease

Endotoxin, originating from the intestinal tract is mainly taken up by the Kupffer cell in the liver. Thus, endotoxemia is not seen in normal individuals. However, if the Kupffer cell is depressed in its function in various hepatic diseases, endotoxin appears in the general circulation causing various symptoms, signs and other clinical states seen in liver diseases. Clinical management for endotoxemia has become extremely important because endotoxin has various biological activities, some of which cause fatal outcome. In addition, almost all kinds of experimental liver injuries are more or less associated with endotoxemia (3). Therefore, endotoxin has been an important subject to study, especially by hepatologists. In this presentation, endotoxemia often seen in acute hepatitis type A, alcoholic hepatitis and cholestasis was studied in association with Kupffer cell function in regard to elucidation of the causes of various clinical manifestations occurring in hepatic diseases.
