Abstract

Civil engineering is one of the oldest professions in the world, and, within it, river engineering is one of the earliest specialisms to have been established. The parallels between the history of river engineering and the political and economic history of society constitute an absorbing area of study. A large proportion of all the historical engineering works catalogued by engineering institutions around the world concern drainage in one form or another.
