Abstract
Pollution of rivers by drainage systems can occur as a result of discharges from combined sewer overflows, surface water outfalls, pumping station overflows and sewage treatment works. In the UK and Europe, most sewage pollution incidents are caused by combined sewer overflows (Figure 6.1).
