If Marcy’s dream of finding planetary systems around half of all stars is based in reality, finding a real Jupiter analog would be an encouraging first sign that such systems may indeed be common in our galaxy. To comprehend the potential impact of finding such extra-solar Jupiter analogs, it is first necessary to assess the impact that our own Jupiter has had on the stable evolution of our Solar System. The mass of Jupiter is greater than the mass of all of the Solar System’s other planets combined. At 5 AU, or five times the distance between Earth and the Sun, it stands sentry to the outer Solar System.
