Data Transmission

  • Marvin E. Frerking

The need for data transmission has increased very rapidly in recent years, both over common carrier lines and over radio links. There are several reasons for this. Obviously, the increased use of computers has generated large volumes of data, some of which must be transmitted between computer sites. Not quite so obvious is the increased use of digital speech, which is replacing analog voice transmission in many services. Also important is the increased use of digital data in telemetry applications and the use of digital data for image transmission (e.g., facsimile and video).
