Digital Algorithms for Communication Systems

Digital signal processing, as it is used in communication systems, often requires the implementation of special functions in addition to filtering. Examples of these are modulation, demodulation, detection, and frequency translation. Often, there are several ways in which a particular function can be implemented; however, one method may require less computation than another. It is important to recognize the many methods to reduce computation in a system, because these tricks often make the difference between a practical system and one that is unrealistically complex. This was particularly important during the early days of digital signal processing, when hardware resources were very limited. Even in present day systems, real advantages can often be realized by recognizing the best algorithm.
