Abstract

The extent of the problem of keeping heat out of a vessel containing a liquid refrigerant varies widely. Before we review the design of actual vessels it will put matters on a quantitative basis to consider two extreme cases, both of which resemble those arising in practice: a 5000-litre liquid-nitrogen tank and a 100-litre liquid-helium vessel.
