Abstract

The pituitary gland and its peptide hormones continue to attract intense investigative interest. This review makes no pretense of including all clinical and research papers in the field. Difficulty is encountered in the classification of papers. Many papers dealing with the pituitary are better considered in sections dealing with the hypothalamus and others in sections dealing with regulation of the function of the various target hormones. Because prolactin and growth hormone do not act on endocrine target glands, they have received more attention. The newer developments in our knowledge of the somatomedins and other growth-hormone-dependent growth factors are reviewed in some detail. The subjects discussed in any review reflect the interests and prejudices of the author. Greater representation by articles from the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism reflects the personal association of the author with that journal.
