Ectopic Hormone Syndromes

  • Chapter
Contemporary Endocrinology

Abstract

Since the previous review,1 there has been considerable growth in interest in the ectopic hormone syndromes. Both radioimmunoassays and radioreceptor assays have been applied much more widely to extracts of the serum and tumors of patients with malignant disease. As a result, there has been widespread recognition of polypeptide hormones in tissues far in excess of that previously observed.2–6 Even more intriguing has been the recognition of peptide hormones in normal nonendocrine tissues such as liver and colon7 and in steroid-producing tissues such as the testis8 (see Table I). These fascinating observations have challenged classic concepts of pathogenesis and have led to considerable speculation concerning the nature of these disorders.
