Enterprise Integration Using Enterprise Architecture

The paper first introduces the concepts of Enterprise Architecture based on the Zachman Framework for Enterprise Architecture. The evolution of enterprises into the Information Age is discussed, together with the evolution of Systems Development Methodologies — resulting in redundant data and redundant processes. To be effective in addressing the problems of non-integrated databases and processes that exist in most enterprise today, Enterprise Integration requires both Business Integration and Technology Integration.

The importance of Metadata for Enterprise Integration is discussed. The Information Engineering methodologies from 1976 through the 1980s have evolved into Enterprise Engineering methods to achieve Business Integration using Enterprise Architecture. The concepts of XML and Web Services are introduced in the paper, with examples. These technologies are used to achieve the Technology Integration component of Enterprise Integration using Enterprise Architecture. Based on the Enterprise Engineering methods, these technologies are also used for rapid delivery of Enterprise Architecture.
