Mass Transfer in Hemodialyzer

Mass transfer studies in a hemodialyzer where the blood and dia­lyzing fluid are in co-current flow are presented. The resistance to mass transfer is assumed to be present in the blood stream side, the dialyzing fluid as well as across the membrane. Three solutions were presented which include (a) integral solution with developing velocity profile for both blood and dialyzing fluid (b) integral solution with fully developed velocity profile and (c) an asymptotic solution based on Lighthill’s formula. The quantitative information obtained in this work is believed to be useful in locating critical areas where further improvements are necessary in order to develop a more efficient unit.
