This chapter focuses on applications of behavior theory in organizational environments such as businesses, government agencies, hospitals, schools, and other nonprofit institutions. The use of behavior theory in the analysis, management, and direction of organizations represents a radical departure from more traditional approaches to the study of business in both management science and traditional psychology. The approach differs in two fundamental ways. First, the behavior-analytic approach uses the three-term contingency to analyze observable performance in the organization and its relation to the observable organizational environment. In contrast, more traditional approaches seek to explain the dynamic of the organization in terms of more hypothetical variables, (needs, motives, etc.). Second, even though behavior-analytic studies are organizational in nature, the focus remains on the behavior of the individual member of the organization across time, a unique feature of behavior analysis. In each of these aspects, the behavioral approach may be said to be orthogonal to the more traditional approaches.
