Abstract

Bone turnover markers have been used in medicine for over 70 years. They have proved indispensable in the management of metabolic bone diseases such as Paget’s disease of bone. The changes in bone turnover in osteoporosis are small; thus, markers that are not specific to bone were not very useful in investigating this disease. However, assays have recently been introduced that are more specific for bone. In this chapter, we consider the evidence for the use of these markers in the investigation of osteoporosis.
