Differential Scanning Calorimetry Studies on DNA Gels

The present report is concerned with a study of the enthal-phy and kinetics of the helix-coil transition of DNA by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Although several investigators have reported calorimetric studies on DNA1–4, the DSC experiment provides kinetic as well as thermal information about the system. We have applied the method of Borchardt and Daniels5 to obtain information concerning the order and activation energy of the thermal denaturation of calf thymus DNA over a pH range of 5.4 to 8.2.
