The Determination of the Heat of Fusion by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and by Measurements of the Heat of Dissolution

  • Chapter

Abstract

A comparison of the DSC and solution calorimetry methods is presented. The instruments used were a DSC-1B and a LKB-8700 precision calorimeter. The calibration procedures and the reproducibility of caloric measurements are reported. As an example the heat of fusion of p-xylene was determined by both methods and the results are compared. The analytical potential of the methods for the characterization of substances is discussed.
