Advances in Nonradiative Processes in Solids

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 249))

Abstract

Non radiative transitions are generally considered as well recognized drawbacks in laser materials because they are known to reduce quantum efficiency. However, some positive aspects of non-radiative processes are always intricately involved with the negative ones in laser materials. The design of a good laser material results from a careful compromise between both aspects.

Starting from a classification of the different non-radiative processes of the ion-phonon and of the ion-ion types, the lectures shall discuss their negative and positive roles at different points in the pumping and laser cycle.

Different cases pertaining to fix and to tunable frequency laser material systems shall be presented, bringing problems to points where they reach the present frontier of research in their fundamental as well as their applied aspects.
