Abstract

Flotation pulps consist of mixtiires of solid particles in an aqueous medium, with small additions of surface active agents (inorgaiüc and organic), and air bubbles. Tlius, all tliree types of phases — solid, liquid, and gaseous — are present. The properties of the bulk phases influence and detennine tlie characteristics of tlie interfaces formed between the adjoining phases. The bonds across interfaces are a direct consequence of bonds vvithin each phase and of the electronic structures in the participating atoms. Any account of interfacial properties must take cognizance of different types of bonding, their relative strengths, and tlieir cooperative effects.
