Abstract
Knowledge of the long-term secular variations of the global geomagnetic field strength and atmospheric radiocarbon activity have proceeded in tandem over the past 40 years. The simultaneous pursuit of these fields of research was an important factor in the recognition of long-term radiocarbon fluctuations because a plausible physical mechanism was provided. This chapter will review both the paleomagnetic and radioisotope research that bears on the problem of geomagnetic modulation of radiocarbon fluctuations.
