Abstract

In 1978, as a result of apparently widespread and increasing dissatisfaction on the part of employers and others about the mathematical abilities of school leavers, Her Majesty’s Government decided to set up a Committee of Enquiry to consider the teaching of mathematics in England and Wales. Education in Scotland is the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Scotland arid is separate from that in England and Wales which comes under the Secretary of State for Education and Science and the Secretary of State for Wales.
