Abstract
The study and interpretation of the textures, sedimentary structures, fossils, and lithologic associations of sedimentary rocks on the scale of an outcrop, well section, or small segment of a basin comprise the subject of facies analysis. In writing this chapter, the author was strongly aware of the several excellent texts now available that deal exclusively with facies analysis, for example, the introductory text by Walker (1984a) and the more advanced treatments by J.L. Wilson (1975) and Reading (1986). Several other books contain a more condensed treatment of the same material (e.g., Blatt et. al., 1980; Leeder, 1982). Therefore, little would be gained by presenting a complete discussion of facies models. Accordingly, this chapter focuses on a discussion of analytical methods and reviews the kinds of information that can be obtained from sediments based on the observations described in Chapter 2.
