Decision Support: A Strategic Weapon

In today’s fast paced environment, healthcare professionals are searching for any competitive advantage that might be available. Ironically, one has been available for many years, but it is frequently unknown, mistrusted, or ignored. This advantage is the appropriate use of the information resource and, more specifically, the transformation of that information into a strategic weapon by use of decision support tools. Use of decision support tools is a vital part of managing the information resource because it provides one of the most powerful techniques for turning the vast amounts of data available in most healthcare organizations into usable information. Therefore, all discussions of the information resource should be understood to include the application of decision support techniques to refine and transform the organization’s data into usable information for decision makers.
