Abstract
Since prospective payment replaced cost based reimbursement, hospitals have had to operate in an increasingly competitive environment. The dramatic change in reimbursement methodology has encouraged, if not forced, hospitals to take on more of the characteristics of traditional businesses. To survive and to thrive in this environment, hospitals and their managers must be able to gather accurate, timely information to put to use for both operational decision making and planning purposes. Taking advantage of computers is key.
