To the frst-time visitor, Winona, Minnesota, may appear somewhat typical of a small Midwestern town: neat and clean, a collection of small houses and businesses that are nestled between the bluffs and the Mississippi River. To be sure, the area is beautiful. Its residents are friendly and hard working. Many of them are descendants of the German and Polish immigrants who arrived in the mid-1800s to operate the lumber mills that sprawled along the riverbanks and to develop the railroad system that was moving West.
