Abstract

The abrupt onset of fever, headache, vomiting, and stiff neck with rapid progression to confusion, obtundation, and loss of consciousness are the typical symptoms of acute meningitis. Evidence of meningeal irritation (inability to flex the neck enough for the mandible to touch the sternum) along with Kernig’s and Brudzinski’s signs is almost invariably present.
